They develop in many ways. Sometimes after a bout of shingles, sometimes in response to toxic factors (metals), often as a result of chronic inflammation (teeth with dead roots) of which not even the patient is aware.

This is generally the result of dysregulation in the body due to impaired metabolism in diabetes, for example. The dysregulation reduces the flow of blood in the capillaries that supply the nerves (in the legs, for example). This leads to acidification of the tissue, which manifests as pain. In rare cases polyneuropathy can develop as a result of exposure to heavy metals, insecticides and other environmental toxins.
